1.2 million points per second.
With five returns.
Zenmuse L2 pairs frame-based LiDAR with a 4/3 CMOS RGB mapping camera and a high-accuracy IMU. Single-return point cloud rate 240,000 pts/sec; with five returns enabled, 1,200,000 pts/sec. Detection range 450m at 50% reflectivity, 250m at 10%. System accuracy 5cm horizontal and 4cm vertical at 150m flight altitude with Optimize Point Cloud Accuracy enabled. The five-return LiDAR is the operational differentiator: in vegetated areas, multiple returns reveal both canopy structure and ground beneath the canopy in a single pass.
905nm. 240 kHz pulse.
Class 1 eye-safe.
905nm wavelength frame LiDAR, 240 kHz pulse emission frequency. Class 1 laser safety per IEC 60825-1:2014. Ranging accuracy 2cm at 150m. Laser beam divergence 0.2 mrad horizontal × 0.6 mrad vertical (FWHM). At 100m flight altitude, laser spot size is 4cm horizontal × 12cm vertical. Two scanning modes: repetitive (FOV 70° × 3°) for high-density swathes along flight lines, non-repetitive (FOV 70° × 75°) for broad coverage with random spot distribution.
4/3 CMOS. 20 MP.
24mm equiv. f/2.8-f/11.
Micro Four Thirds CMOS sensor at 20 MP effective resolution — substantially larger than the L1's 1-inch sensor. FOV 84°, 24mm equivalent, aperture f/2.8 to f/11. Mechanical shutter 2-1/2000s, electronic shutter 2-1/8000s, shutter count rated 200,000 cycles. Provides colourised point cloud RGB data plus standalone 4K/30fps orthomosaic-grade imagery. Photo size 5280×3956 (4:3). JPEG and RAW (DNG) formats.
200 Hz IMU.
1 cm + 1 ppm horizontal.
Self-developed high-accuracy IMU at 200 Hz update frequency. Accelerometer ±6 g, angular velocity meter ±300 dps. Horizontal positioning accuracy 1 cm + 1 ppm in RTK FIX, vertical 1.5 cm + 1 ppm. Point cloud system accuracy at 150m flight altitude: 5cm horizontal, 4cm vertical with DJI Terra's Optimize Point Cloud Accuracy enabled (4cm vertical and 8cm horizontal without optimisation). The IMU is what transforms LiDAR points into a coherent point cloud — at 200 Hz, sub-degree drift is bounded for typical mission durations.
Canopy + ground.
One LiDAR pass.
Five-return LiDAR captures up to five surfaces per laser pulse. In vegetated areas, this means a single pulse can register canopy top, mid-canopy branches, understory, ground, and water surface beneath ground — five layers of geometric data from one scan line. Critical for forestry inventories (canopy height + biomass + sub-canopy terrain), terrain modelling in vegetated areas, and corridor surveys where you need both above-canopy structure and ground reference. The L1 supported only 3 returns — L2's 5 returns substantially expand the kind of survey work the payload handles.
One-click processing.
Point cloud LiveView in DJI Pilot 2.
End-to-end workflow with DJI Terra: import the SD card data, choose Linear Scan or Area Route, generate colourised point clouds with one-click processing. Optimize Point Cloud Accuracy applies bundle adjustment and PPK correction to push accuracy below 5cm. Real-time point cloud LiveView in DJI Pilot 2 — see the point cloud building in flight, not just after landing. Export formats: PNTS, LAS, PLY, PCD, S3MB for downstream GIS and survey software. Single-flight coverage 2.5 km².

Need to know.
L2 vs L3 — which one for my operation?+
L3 if you need long-range LiDAR (>500m AGL), survey deliverables at 1:500-1:2000 scale, dual 100MP RGB mapping cameras, or operate in dense vegetation requiring 16-return penetration. L3 requires M400 airframe specifically — premium tier. L2 if your operations fit within 50-300m AGL, 5-return penetration is sufficient (typical for utility corridors, urban mapping, civil engineering surveys), and you operate M350 RTK or M300 RTK airframes already. For 80% of professional survey operations in India, L2 is the right tool. L3 is the long-range / high-end flagship tier.
L1 to L2 upgrade — what actually changes?+
Five concrete differences. (1) Returns: 3 → 5, materially better canopy penetration. (2) Multi-return rate: 480k → 1.2M pts/sec, denser point clouds. (3) RGB: 1″ CMOS → 4/3 CMOS at the same 20 MP, larger sensor means sharper colourisation. (4) Compatibility: M300 RTK only → M300 RTK + M350 RTK + M400, future-proof for fleet upgrades. (5) Calibration window: 50m sweet spot → 150m sweet spot, broader coverage per flight at the same accuracy.
Software workflow — DJI Terra plus third-party?+
DJI Terra is the native pipeline: data import, one-click point cloud generation with Optimize Point Cloud Accuracy for sub-5cm results. PPK post-processing with TimeStamps and IMU files for bundle adjustment. Exports to PNTS / LAS / LAZ / PLY / PCD / S3MB. Third-party compatibility: LAS exports open directly in TerraSolid, Cyclone, Trimble Realworks, GreenValley LiDAR360, CloudCompare. For forestry inventory: LiDAR360 has dedicated canopy height model and biomass estimation tools. For corridor surveys: TerraSolid's TerraScan and TerraModeler are the industry standard.
DGCA considerations for LiDAR surveying in India?+
Standard RPC + Digital Sky registration for commercial UAS operations. Type Certificate for the airframe. LiDAR surveys typically operate at 50-300m AGL — green zone if outside sensitive boundaries. Flights above 120m AGL require DGCA-issued unmanned aircraft system traffic management (UTM) coordination through Digital Sky. For sensitive area surveys (defence, critical infrastructure, contested borders) DGCA Yellow Zone permission plus the local authority's site clearance. LiDAR is a passive geometric sensor — Class 1 eye-safe at 905nm doesn't trigger Class A laser concerns. Jetayu can advise on documentation specific to your operation type.
